Breast Cancer Awareness; Pink Ribbon Face Painting
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students wanted to complete a project to raise money to donate to a cause in Massachusetts. They spent some time researching and decided on a specific hospital, Brigham and Women’s. Melanie North, CCSR academic advisor, reached out to Dr. Charity Glass who works at Dana Farber, Beth Israel Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Glass is a breast cancer surgeon who was more than willing to work with our students to find a program to donate to. The students chose The Breast Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Glass scheduled a date (November 22) to come in and talk with our students about the realities of breast cancer and the impact our donation made on cancer research. This was a fantastic meeting that allowed students to ask any questions they had about breast cancer. The students planned out a 3-day span that they could paint pink ribbons on the cheeks of fellow students and staff for $2.00. This event was super successful and a lot of fun! They raised $400 to donate. Students are currently waiting for a personalized letter of thanks from Dr. Glass for our project fair in April.
