Creation of Fortune Tellers to be Placed in the Cafeteria

Fifth graders Daniel and Jayden wanted to follow up on a project that they initially completed in second grade. These students proposed to make origami fortune tellers with each square discussing changes in our environment and what we can do as students to protect our resources. We used our google chromebooks to look for information that would help to explain to our fellow fourth and fifth-grade students the importance of keeping our physical environment safe and healthy for future generations. We created over 90 of these fortune tellers so that they were available during 2 weeks of both fourth and fifth-grade lunches in the cafeteria. We asked our assistant principal, Ms. Fiumara, for assistance, placed these at the cafeteria tables and let her know that we would be available to answer any questions that our fellow students may have had. Our fellow students enjoyed the opportunity to both manipulate the fortune tellers using their hands as well as learning new and interesting facts about how our simple actions such as recycling, turning off lights when we leave a room, using reusable water bottles, etc, can both help the planet and all who inhabit it to survive. Our future goal is to create additional areas for recycling and energy conservation within the McGlynn School Complex to promote a healthier environment.
